Ziva’s community effort focuses on artisanal miners. Ziva Community Initiative aims to explore mining-related issues in the mining community in order to focus on areas where miners are having difficulty. The community engagement project focused on involving mining host communities and Ziva Community Initiative through open dialogues between traditional leaders in mining host communities and ZCI. Ziva Community Initiative visited different mining host communities in Barkin-Ladi and Mangu Local Government Areas in Plateau state. A cordial relationship was established between ZCI and the mining host communities.
The main aim of the project was to established community engagement between Ziva Community Initiative, Artisanal Miners and mining host communities. Other specific objectives include;
- To introducing the concept cooperatives to the Artisanal Miners
- To Identify issues confronting Artisanal Miners and the mining host communities,
- To create an avenue for financial literacy for Artisanal Miners.
Major stakeholders in this project are Ministry of Mines and Steel Development and traditional leaders from mining host communities. Through this research, Ziva Community Initiative were able to create a friendly relationship with the mining host communities. Evidently, majority of the miners have expressed an interest in forming cooperatives.
